First impressions are lasting when meeting a new client, a potential employer or a first date. It begins with the handshake and a glance over with a quick look at groomed hands and a polished manicure. It’s only natural that determining whether you’ve made a good impression can be a nail-biter – no pun intended. Neatly manicured hands are an important element of a person’s personal brand and overall image.

The nail bar and salon business is a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States. On any given day, both women and men can be found visiting their favorite technician for nail and cuticle trims, buffs, pedicures and more. Choosing a qualified and knowledgeable professional is vital for health and aesthetics.

According to Jessica Danielle Haavisto, entrepreneur and owner of Jessica Danielle The Nail Bar, focusing on safety is a paramount concern she has for both clients and nail technicians.

“It’s important to do it right, from start to finish,” Jessica Danielle explains. “We’re focused on quality. We use the safest products and applications, including liquids and techniques. I do a lot of research and mentor our technicians, making sure they are informed and practicing safe procedures and using safe products, because some salons don’t always use products that are legal, especially with acrylics.”

For example, Methyl methacrylate is a bonding agent that was commonly used with acrylic nail application until the general public learned of its harmful effects several years ago. Today its use is prohibited in salons, however, some salons continue to use the compound due to a lower cost compared to other products.

Jessica Danielle has been in the nail business for 14 years. She began styling hair and decided to focus on nails. Ultimately, she opened Jessica Danielle The Nail Bar, located at 3984 Fulton Drive NW in Canton, in 2018 and has plans to add an additional location in the future.

“I always wanted to own my own salon. Entrepreneurship runs in my family. At my nail bar, we focus on quality and trying to bring nails to life. We offer exclusive nail art, and we use the safest products available,” she explains.

The Nail Bar features six specialized technicians who focus on a variety of client issues, ranging from nail biting and damage to fungus resulting from nail moisture. Other services include custom nail designs, gel manicures, spa pedicures, permanent makeup and more.

When asked for an inside scoop for upcoming trends in nail art, Jessica Danielle says animal prints are among the top picks for the upcoming year.

JESSICA DANIEL'S TIPS FOR HEALTHY NAILS

01//  When removing acrylics, always soak them off. Ripping them can damage the nail plate.

02// Use cuticle oil every day. Cuticle oil helps maintain healthy nails and cuticles and can also help protect from trauma and damage.

03// It is acceptable for a technician to use an e-file. When used properly, it should not damage nails.

04// During the application of acrylic nails, confirm the technician is using Ethyl Methacrylate (EMA) and not the cheaper Methyl Methacrylate (MMA). The EMA product will allow the acrylic to flake off after soaking. A good indicator MMA is being used is that MMA will cause nails to be slimy when being removed. If unsure, ask the technician to see the labels on products.

Additional Tips:

  • Never let a technician use any supplies that were used previously. Always use a new file, sanding band, buffer, etc.
  • Instruments should always be sanitized between clients.
  • Do not bite your nails.
