4 Sports, 1 Strong athlete

This Riverwood senior has a bright future!

It wasn't easy, but we caught up with Elle Mezzio, a senior at Riverwood International Charter School.

Meet Elle!

I participate in four varsity sports: cross-country, diving, soccer, and track & field. I have advanced to State in all of them every year. My favorite is cross-country as I love trail running and my close-knit team. Some of my achievements include coming in third at State, seventh at Meet of Champions, four-time MVP, Student Athlete of the Month, and a two-time invitee to the Powerade All-Metro Cross-Country Banquet run by Atlanta Track Club. For dive, I’ve place sixth at State, for soccer, I play left forward and have advanced to the final four, and in track, I’ve placed eighth in the 1600. At school, I’m ranked within the top 5 percent of my class and I am in the Dual Enrollment program at GSU. In college, I plan on studying pre-medicine.

PNL: You’re busy! What does your workout schedule look like this month?

EM: January is a crazy month for me because I have three sports at once! I practice three times a week for dive at 6:30 pm as I prepare for State in February. I have 90-minute track conditioning right after school until soccer and track tryouts, when I then transition to 90-minute soccer practices after school. Competitions for soccer and track don’t start until February.

PNL: Fuel for athletes and students is so important. What are your go-to healthy snacks and healthy meals?

EM: My go-to snack is not the ordinary post-practice snack. I like Goldfish (for salt/electrolyte recovery), a banana with peanut butter, and a glass of organic 1% milk. My favorite healthy meal is a power bowl consisting of penne pasta, chopped up grilled chicken, and steamed broccoli, all with a plain marinara sauce with olive oil.

PNL: I can’t imagine you have much spare time, but where in Sandy Spring and Dunwoody do you like to shop, people watch and order food?

EM: One of my favorite restaurants is Hearth Pizza Tavern. Their simply red or simply white pizzas are some of the best in Georgia! I like to shop at Perimeter Mall. I really like Nordstrom and Von Maur for buying school dance dresses!

PNL: What routines do you have to keep you grounded, tuned in, and sane?

EM: Before big competitions, I remind myself of the months of preparation, the excitement I have to compete, the curiosity I have to see myself push my limits, and of course, my senior strength. Doing well is just as mental as it is physical, so this quick reflection routine is vital. Also, I have a routine of not going to bed past 11:30 pm because sleep is more important than finishing schoolwork.
