“The Island Salt and Spa is the intersection between wellness and beauty,” said Michelle. MICHELLE is the owner, founder and one of the spa’s massage therapists.  She started her healing journey with the idea of becoming a nurse, then physical therapist, eventually landing on massage therapy. When asked about her path, she said “I kind of got side tracked, which is often divine intervention. Along came massage therapy.” She reflected. “I truly love helping people.”

We sat inside the salt room and spoke for the better part of an hour, discussing the importance of mental and physical wellness, how fortunate we are to live on the south shore of Long Island, her appreciation for millennials taking time for themselves, and the road to opening the business. She is calm, her voice soft, yet her passion for wellness is palpable. By the end we were laughing, crying and hugging. It was a particularly special interview and something tells me she treats every client this way- like family.

She’s a firm believer that we should be treating ourselves better, that we deserve to release ourselves from stress, anxiety and pain. This is the message that sets the Island Salt and Spa apart from a typical spa experience. Here, #selfcare is more than just a hashtag and on-trend movement. MICHELLE and her staff really believe that taking time out of your day, week, or month to forget about the stresses of life can give you the tools to manage your stress better. And in many ways she’s right; studies show that low-stress leads to less illness and a longer lifespan.

Upon entering, you are immediately welcomed by friendly faces. The sun beams in the reception area like a warm hug. After checking in, you’re either led to a massage room, esthitician’s room, or the salt room. If your service is a massage, look up! The stunning tin ceilings are original to the building. Each massage therapist is certified and trained to tailor the massage to your needs, whether it’s to relax, relieve stress, or rehabilitate tired muscles. The showers in the couple’s massage room are perfect for those who want to rinse off the natural oils and get on with their day.

MICHELLE’S vision is also focused on beauty, because when you’re feeling good on the inside and out, it can radiate to all aspects of life. Along with the signature Island Salt facial, the estheticians also offer several anti-aging facials using the salt-based, straight-from-France Thalgo products (which are available for purchase to create everlasting effects).

The most impressive room in the entire spa has to be the salt room. Shipped in directly from the Hymilaian mountains near Pakistan, each brick inside the salt room is quite literally glowing with benefits. When turned on, the Halotherapy machine emits salt particles so you are surrounded by therapeutic relief. This time of year has its ups (the holidays!) and its downs (dry air and seasonal depression!) and halotherapy can actually help with many of the things old man winter brings along. Noise-cancelling headphones and a soft, clean blanket makes your time in the salt room meditative. Add a foot soak and calf rub to complete the experience.

As January sinks in and our enthusiastic new year resolution echoes loudly in our mind (Gym membership! Quit smoking! Save money!) consider wellness. A massage is not just for the overworked mom of three and forty five minutes in the salt room is not just for the new-age millennial with eczema. Everyone in the community can benefit from a place like Island Salt and Spa, so as we embark on the month of half-baked attempts at self improvement, try something that has everlasting effects.

Dry salt therapy is very beneficial for overall wellness by removing toxins from the respiratory system. Each brick has been shipped from the Hymilayans and has shown to help with eczema, Psoriasis, Asthma, allergies, ear infections, among many other ailments associated with skin and lungs.
