Music and Art Come Together in Birmingham

Art Gallery Owner Combines Passions

How did Gerard Marti of the Robert Kidd Gallery end up in Birmingham?

Gerard was born in France, schooled at École des Beaux-Arts in Paris but later became a musician, songwriter, sound engineer, record producer and video director for EMI Records. In 1991, Gerard decided to take on a new gallery venture that specialized in artworks by celebrities and musicians first in Maui, Hawaii and, ever since 2014, in metro Detroit.

What's new at the gallery?

The Robert Kidd Gallery is, as of now, the only gallery in the US featuring and selling artwork by internationally-known singer and songwriter Bob Dylan, whose paintings are awash with classic American imagery of diners, motels and railroads, similar to the traditional folk and blues-feel in his music.

How does Gerard's background in music help him as an art gallery owner?

Gerard's personal relationships with some of the world’s top entertainers, specifically with the late David Bowie (make sure to ask Marti about the beginnings of their friendship), has not only helped fill the walls of his gallery with celebrity and musician work but also raise money for local charities. “I’ve asked friends like Steven Tyler to sign paintings and donate his drumming gloves and sticks, which raised thousands of dollars in only a few hours at our charity events,” Gerard explains.

When will the next event or exhibition be at Robert Kidd Gallery?

On Dec. 6, the gallery will host an exclusive reception and book signing with Ed Balian, the biographer of Turn the Page: The Bob Seger Story, which will benefit the Oakland County Children’s Village Foundation. Tickets can be purchased at CVFoundation.com. Bob Seger will be in attendance. Gerard is also planning to host another gallery event with Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac (date yet to be determined) who spends his free time photographing flowers, butterflies and landscapes. Robert Kidd Gallery sells his limited edition photograph prints on aluminum that are all signed and numbered by Fleetwood.

“I love what I do,” Gerard says while standing in the basement of his downtown Birmingham gallery, surrounded by internationally-renowned celebrity and musician artwork, including that of John Lennon, Miles Davis, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and more.
