Transition Your Skincare for  Winter

SEASONS CHANGE SO DOES YOUR SKINCARE...

As the leaves change colors and temperatures drop, it's not just your wardrobe that needs an update. Your skincare routine also requires a seasonal transition to combat the challenges that fall and winter can pose. Cold, dry air, indoor heating, and harsh winds can wreak havoc on your skin, leading to dryness, irritation, and even breakouts. In this article, we'll explore the essential skincare changes you need to make for the upcoming fall and winter months to maintain healthy, glowing skin.

Hydration is Key

Fall and winter air is significantly drier than in the warmer months, and this can lead to skin dehydration. To combat this, focus on hydrating your skin both internally and externally. I recommend using a quality Hyaluronic Acid such as Hydrinity renewing Serum or Zo's Firming serum. The size of the molecule matters the smaller the molecular size of the HA the deeper it penetrates! Don't just purchase something from someone on Instagram!

Drink More Water: Start from the inside out by increasing your water intake. Staying well-hydrated helps maintain your skin's moisture balance.

Switch to a Richer Moisturizer: Swap your lightweight summer moisturizer for a heavier, hydrating cream. Look for products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin to lock in moisture. I love Zo's Growth Factor for a night time boost in hydration and wrinkle prevention.

Exfoliate Gently

As the seasons change, your skin may become more prone to dullness due to a buildup of dead skin cells. However, it's important to be gentle when exfoliating during the colder months.

Use a Gentle Exfoliant: My favorite is ZO Exfoliating Polish

Reduce Frequency: Exfoliate less frequently – 3-4 times a week – to avoid over-exfoliating and damaging your skin's moisture barrier.

Protect from Harsh Weather

Cold winds and low temperatures can damage your skin's natural barrier. To protect your skin, consider the following steps:

Sunscreen is Still a Must: Don't be fooled by the absence of glaring sun – UV rays are present year-round. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.

Invest in a Good Lip Balm: Your lips are especially susceptible to chapping in the colder months. LipSmart is formulated to keep your lips soft and supple. I keep on my night stand and use in the morning and at night before bed!

Adjust Your Cleansing Routine

Cleansing is essential, but you don't want to strip your skin of its natural oils. Adjust your cleansing routine for fall and winter:

Switch to a Gentle Cleanser: Opt for a more hydrating cleanser, such as ZO Hydrating cleanser.

Double Cleansing: For those who wear makeup, double cleansing can help ensure your skin is thoroughly clean without over-cleansing. I use Dermalogica's pre-cleanse and ZO Hydrating cleanser in the fall and winter months.

Humidify Your Indoor Space:

Indoor heating systems can be extremely drying to your skin. Invest in a humidifier to add moisture back into the air.

Treat Skin Concerns:

Fall and winter can exacerbate skin conditions like eczema and rosacea. If you have these issues, consult with a dermatologist for a personalized treatment plan.

Transitioning your skincare routine for fall and winter is all about maintaining hydration, protecting your skin from harsh weather, and adjusting your products to suit the changing needs of your skin. With these essential tips in mind, you can keep your skin healthy, glowing, and ready to face the colder months with confidence. Remember, consistency is key, so be diligent in your skincare routine for the best results throughout the fall and winter seasons.
