Building Community One Tiny Home at a Time

How Budget Blinds Gives Back

For Budget Blinds, giving back isn’t just an act of kindness—it’s a core value. Recently, the team at Budget Blinds dedicated their Saturday to participate in a unique team-building experience with Sound Foundations NW. They assisted in helping to construct tiny homes for individuals experiencing homelessness. This day of service not only strengthened their bond as colleagues but also deepened their connection to the community they serve.

“As a business owner and part of the community, I believe it’s our responsibility to give back,” shares the owner of Budget Blinds, Aaron Miler. “This was a chance for us to come together as a team and contribute to a cause that’s making a real difference. It wasn’t just about building tiny homes; it was about building hope.”

The outing proved to be transformative for the team. Working side by side, they started with a pile of lumber and, within a few hours, saw the framework of a tiny home come to life—a platform, four walls, and a roof. This hands-on experience provided an immediate sense of accomplishment. Barb Oliver, the Director of Operations at Sound Foundations NW explains, “Groups like Budget Blinds get to see tangible results of their work. It’s not just about hammering nails; it’s about knowing you’re creating a safe space for someone to rebuild their life.”

Built to last 20+ years, a single tiny home has the potential to transform the lives of up to 60 individuals. Currently, about 750 tiny homes are in use, and last year alone, these homes helped approximately 2,000 people transition off the streets. Sound Foundations NW, which operates six days a week with volunteers ranging from ages 16 to 96. “We’ve donated almost $2.5 million worth of homes, and with the support of groups like Budget Blinds, we’re closer to our goal of achieving functional zero homelessness in King County by 2027,” says Barb.

The experience also gave Budget Blinds’ team a deeper understanding of the struggles faced by the homeless population. “When everyone came back, they were so energized,” Aaron recalls. “Not only were we proud to contribute, but we also gained a deeper understanding of the challenges our homeless neighbors face and the hope that programs like this bring.”

“For me, it’s about more than running a business,” Aaron explains. “Knowing that we’re part of something bigger—that we’re helping to improve lives—gives me immense pride. What you get back is so much more than what you give.”

By stepping up to support Sound Foundations NW, Budget Blinds exemplifies how businesses can combine community service with team building, showing that even small actions can lead to big changes.
