The year-end season is a great reason to celebrate and make holiday traditions with your family. If you celebrate Christmas, you may want to consider cutting and buying your own from a local tree farm this year. The total experience can become special bonding event during the holiday season for young families with children. There are plenty of Christmas tree farms here in Central Florida. Make it a fun and memorable experience by planning the day. Bring your cameras!

Christmas History & Traditions: Long before the advent of Christianity plants and trees that remained green all year had a special meaning for people in the winter. The history of Christmas trees goes back to the symbolic use of evergreens for the Christmas holiday as used in ancient Egypt and Rome. The tradition of cutting your own Christmas tree started in Germany where they lit them with candles. Ancient people hung evergreen boughs and wreaths over their doors and windows. Some believed that evergreens would keep away witches, ghosts, evil spirits and illness. The Christmas tree tradition was brought to America in the 1800s. Christmas trees are now grown in all 50 states.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the shortest day and longest night of the year falls on December 21 or December 22 and it’s called the winter solstice. Historically, people believed that winter came every year because the sun God had become sick and weak. They celebrated the solstice because it meant that the sun God would begin to get well. Evergreen wreaths reminded them that the green plants would grow again when the sun God was strong and summer would return.
