Southwest Mountains Vineyards is gearing up to celebrate the first anniversary of the grand opening of their stunning tasting room this month! Owners Diane and Paul Manning fulfilled their dream of opening their tasting room after renovating a magnificent two-story pole barn for their daughter's wedding. Nestled at the foot of the Southwest Mountains, the tasting room is a unique sanctuary, a testament to Diane and Paul's profound love for their land. Surrounded by scenic roads and trails offering stunning views of rolling emerald hills, it's a place that promises a one-of-a-kind experience. Inspired by the Monticello AVA, a standout in the Virginia wine region, Southwest Mountains Vineyards started growing grapes in 2016 and producing exceptional wines in 2017.
In celebration of their first anniversary, SMV is set to launch Boela Gerber's highly anticipated inaugural 2023 Virginia wine. Boela, SMV's head winemaker, brings over 20 years of expertise from Groot Constantia, an iconic South African winery, to offer a unique perspective on the Virginia terroir. The result is a remarkable collection of wines that beautifully captures the region's essence while showcasing Boela and his team's exceptional artistry. SMV plans to host intimate tasting events, both virtual and in-person, to allow wine enthusiasts to experience Boela’s magic firsthand.
SMV's tasting room offers an extraordinary journey for wine and food enthusiasts. Expertly curated wine selections lead you on a sensory adventure while Chef Gregory's culinary expertise takes the experience to new heights. From a delectable assortment of charcuterie to unique specials, each dish is thoughtfully crafted to harmonize with the distinctive flavors of the wines. The tasting room also offers picturesque outdoor spaces, perfect for sipping wines and relaxing in the fresh air. The expansive grounds provide ample space for memorable family gatherings, ensuring an unforgettable experience with warm hospitality.
Reflecting on the first year open to the public, SMV appreciates the warm welcome and support from the local community, fellow winemakers, and the industry. “We've been overjoyed by the growth of our wine club and the support of the club members who genuinely feel like family; their countless visits, laughter, and genuine interest in our story is heartwarming,” General Manager Jodi Mills says. “We want to express our deepest gratitude to our local community and wine club members, who have been integral to our success and have enriched our lives in ways we could never have imagined.”
Apart from celebrating their one-year anniversary, SMV is also celebrating their medal-winning wines from the 2024 Virginia Governor’s Cup Competition, receiving two Gold and four Silver Medals. A limited edition “Governor’s Cup Flight” is available at the winery and is the best way for everyone to taste the best of the best. The Monticello AVA was honored to win Wine Enthusiast's Wine Region of the Year for 2023. This once-in-a-lifetime honor and recognition have brought global attention to Virginia’s wine industry, the talented winemakers, and the wineries within the Monticello AVA.
SMV is passionate about sharing its love for wine and eagerly welcomes guests. Their goal is to generate excitement beyond the typical wine connoisseur, attracting new wine enthusiasts and introducing them to the beauty and complexity of Virginia wines. By sharing their story, highlighting the unique characteristics of their grapes, and showcasing the passion that goes into every bottle, they believe they can leave a lasting impression and cultivate a devoted following.
