Hunting for hidden waterfalls is one of my favorite things to do when hiking, and our neighboring state of Tennessee has more waterfalls than you can possibly find in one trip.

In a recent excursion to the Upper Cumberland Region of Tennessee, we discovered some of the prettiest waterfalls in the region.

1. Fall Creek Falls State Park - Fall Creek Falls State Park is one of Tennessee's largest parks, and Fall Creek Falls, at 256 feet, is one of the highest waterfalls in the eastern United States. Other waterfalls within the park include Piney Falls, Cane Creek Falls, and Cane Creek Cascades.

2. Colditz Cove is a 165-acre natural area in Fentress County. Its Northrup Falls is one of Tennessee’s most stunning waterfalls, plunging more than 60 feet over a protruding rock ledge into a scenic, narrow, gorge along Big Branch Creek.

3. Big Laurel Falls and Virgin Falls - The 4-mile hike to Virgin Falls is one of the most strenuous in Tennessee, but the waterfalls you'll find there are worth the 8-mile round trip hike. Virgin Falls drops over a 110-foot high cliff, and area is noted for several other waterfalls including Big Laurel, Sheep Cave Falls, and Big Branch Falls.

4. Ozone Falls - Ozone Falls Natural Area is a 43-acre natural area in Cumberland County and Ozone Falls plunges 110 feet into a deep, rock-strewn pool. The area is so lovely that it was featured in the movie “Jungle Book.”
