The Gift of Financial Planning

Prepare for the Future with a Year-End Review and Tips from RavenRock Wealth Partners

Whether as a steward of his clients’ security or his own family’s well-being, financial planner and investment advisor Bob Reininger of RavenRock Wealth Partners knows the value of being prepared. With COVID-19 as an overlay, our world has realized the lesson that there will always be circumstances we cannot control.  Yet with measured planning, we can be prepared just as a fisherman takes the right equipment when going out to sea. For Bob, he understands the worlds of nature and of finance— both areas full of unpredictability. To understand his tool kit for investing, it helps to understand Bob’s early background as a fisheries biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and as a commercial fisherman. His interest in investing came to life when he invested his first paychecks after a catch. While some fishing trips were more successful than others, investing had tangible rewards with both short- and long-term potential. Twenty-five years of financial experience later—starting with Dean Witter in 1995 to his current incarnation as founder of RavenRock in Bend—he melds worlds of both science and interpretation, to help clients of all ages tailor a financial plan to their wants and needs. Bob has obtained the Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA®) and Accredited Investment Fiduciary® designations. His process includes listening to the goals for each individual investor to assess their needs, creating, then implementing a plan. “Whether it’s ten-thousand dollars or 100-million dollars, it’s their life work,” he says. “No two clients are exactly the same and we target their specific goals.” Bob finds it rewarding to have multiple generations of clients, from  grandparents, to adult children and their children, even great-grandchildren.

Bringing depth of knowledge to the intersection of unprecedented historical events in 2020, Bob’s end-of-the-year review with clients is especially important today. While he does not offer tax advice, “End-of-year tax planning is a conversation everyone should be having with their tax advisor,” he says. Beyond discussing tax projections, capital gains, plans to make charitable or family gifts by year end, he recommends asking, “How did March or April make you feel?” Bob says. “You have an opportunity for a ‘do-over.’” In a scenario of being prepared for the unexpected, Bob recommends a comprehensive look that reviews asset allocation, and short-term and long-term goals with a rearview look at historical trends and how markets have adapted over the years. Understanding each investor is unique, Bob emphasizes the importance of working with each individual client to ask, “What do you need? For how many years? Let’s get you to your goals.” As 2020 comes to a close, Bob shares a few tips:

1.) Support Local Nonprofits. With nonprofits stressed by COVID cancellations of their fundraisers this year, along with increased needs for the services those organizations provide, they can use financial support now more than ever. “If you have the financial means, consider giving back to any number of causes.” Support something or someone you believe in, whether it’s a church, a nonprofit, or even an individual, such as an athlete. Bob gives back in many ways, such as by volunteering for BendFilm since 2005, and currently as a Board Member.

2.) Invest in the Future.  “Instead of Nintendo, consider gifting a ROTH this year,” says Bob. If your children have earned income, evaluate opening an IRA for them. “There’s no time better than the present to start teaching young people the value of investing,” he says. Bob, along with his wife Suzy, have encouraged their daughter Alexandra, a biologist with the NOAA Protected Species Division in Honolulu, Hawaii, to start investing early.

3.) Consult a Professional. RavenRock Wealth Partners includes Bob Reininger and his business partner, Client Service Manager Lesa Lawrence, whom he worked with starting at Morgan Stanley in 2002 and at the investment bank UBS. Partnering with Raymond James and its client-first philosophy, RavenRock uses a hybrid model to offer options of brokerage and investment advisory. They tailor their services to the needs and preferences of clients, whether on a fee-only or transactional basis. RaymondJames.com/RavenRockWealthPartners
