The Dog Days of Frederick

Pet-Friendly Around Town

Take a walk through downtown Frederick, and you’ll find dogs and their owners on every corner. Restaurants and corporate offices alike are becoming more and more pet-friendly. On Market Street, you’ll almost always find the Brewer’s Alley patio brimming with patrons and their dogs. Thanks to owner and dog lover Phil Bowers, they have been pet-friendly since the beginning 23 years ago.

“People have really enjoyed bringing their dogs, for people to see dogs and for their kids to enjoy,” says manager Travis Vaughn.

Their patio is spacious enough for people with big dogs, small dogs or no dogs to enjoy a cold brew and the company of their furry companions.

Just down the way, you’ll find another restaurant looking forward to seeing visitors of a different species. You can’t miss the brightly colored dog bowls scattered around the table legs in Pistarro’s outdoor dining space, beckoning customers to bring their dogs and stay a while.

“We’re really kid-friendly, and we’re really pet-friendly,” says manager Steve Flynn. “I’d like it to be the kind of place where a young couple can bring their child who still might scream and their dog, and they don’t need to be fearful about that here at our restaurant.”

When Steve comes outside to welcome our pets and make sure their water bowls are filled, we know he truly means what he says.

The dog-friendly vibe continues with the Delaplaine Center for the Arts. Want to include your dog in your wedding? The Delaplaine's event venue would be happy to have you. Events like this, plus bringing a dog to art class or taking a tour with man’s best friend has become routine at the center.

“Many people who have been out and about with their canine companion have found it convenient to stop in and not have to leave their best friend in the car or skip the visit because they have the dog with them,” says Duane Doxzen, director of Development and Communications. “We welcome well-behaved dogs in our facility, and even our CEO, Catherine Moreland brings her two dogs to work with her.”

Just across the Monocacy Bridge, Monocacy Crossing Restaurant owner Kelly Regan also loves having a dog-friendly patio.

“We are located close to so many trails where folks take their dogs with them. It just makes sense. We definitely have fun with it!”

Make an evening of their Yappy Hour on Aug. 7 from 5–7 p.m., where you can purchase dog-inspired cocktails and give back at the same time. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Operation Paws for Homes, which provides foster and adoption services for dogs in Maryland and the surrounding states.

With so many places opening their doors to welcome us with our best friends, Frederick is definitely a really cool place to raise a family and a dog.
