Dramatic Blue Dining Room Reveal was originally published in Thou Swell

I am so excited to share the reveal of the bold new dining room at Tye Street Project, completely reimagined with a dark high-gloss blue on the walls and a new approach to the dining layout. As you saw in the previous layout of the room, a huge table dominated the room. While it was perfect for entertaining (which my dad often does), I always found the table to be just a bit too big for the room, and prevented me from imagining any improvements to the space. We decided to move that table to my dad’s spacious sunroom and replace it with a smaller circular table. Now he can entertain larger groups in the back room and keep things more intimate in the dining room! We also made room for a few pieces that had moved out of his bedroom – the armchairs and area rug. All of the new red in the room was begging for a dramatic navy backdrop, so I channeled an old-world club vibe (perfect for the club chairs) with a modern edge (hence the striking chandelier) for the new look. Continue reading for all the details!

P.S. Just a few days left to enter to win $250 towards custom window treatments from Alva, the generous sponsor of the beautiful white Belgian linen curtains in this room!

While I was worried that vintage Italian cane-back leather folding chairs wouldn’t work with the new scheme, their green seats ended up working well with all of the cool, dark colors in the room. The new X-base dining table lends a more contemporary silhouette to the space and the lighter finish on the wood is perfect with of the mid-century pieces in the room.

I simply adore our beautiful linen curtains from Alva. Our previous ones were cheap white with a grommet top, but upgrading from cotton to pin hook, linen curtains with lining and inverted pleats made all the difference. I made sure to stretch out the curtain rod about twice the width of the window to make it look larger and let the beautiful folds of the pleats soften the focal point of the room.

While the new wall color is dark, the high-gloss finish reflects so much light (it’s almost reflective itself) that the room feels just as spacious, although much more dynamic now.

Our new sideboard continues to be the entertainer’s best friend, and the color of the wood, plus those great brass handles, look stunning against the dark blue.

Although most of the crown molding in the house is not original, the fireplaces in the living and dining rooms are, and the detail is amazing! They bring a lot of character to each room and it was fun to style this one with some blue and white accessories.

How stunning is that chandelier and ceiling medallion combination? Ever since I saw this room I knew I wanted to put a modern light fixture in – it’s the perfect centerpiece to the room! What’s your favorite part of this transformation?
