Finding community in retirement living

Cedar Lake Village provides a continuum of care for residents

A wide range of residential needs are available for senior citizens, and often significant moves are required as needs increase. Finding one place that meets all those needs on the same campus can be difficult, but that’s exactly what Cedar Lake Village offers.

As a continuum-of-care retirement community located on the campus of Olathe Health Hospital, Cedar Lake Village has a full range of housing options. With villas, independent living apartments, assisted living and memory-care assisted living alongside a post-acute rehabilitation facility and a skilled nursing facility, the needs of all seniors can be met on the same campus.

“I often hear from our new residents that ‘Cedar Lake Village just feels different when you walk through the door—it just feels like home,’” says Joanna Randall, executive director. “You can feel the loving and welcoming environment. The staff and residents are friendly and inviting, and the environment is relaxing. Sometimes they have trouble explaining why they have that feeling, but I believe it is because we are a faith-based organization. We want to show God’s love in all that we do and say every day, and no matter your faith, everyone wants to feel important and loved. Cedar Lake Village is jointly owned by Olathe Health and the Good Samaritan Society, both faith-based organizations with similar missions, which is a neat partnership that has been in place almost 20 years now.”

The staff seeks to meet the physical, mental, intellectual, spiritual, social, and emotional needs of the residents through various programming and offerings. Some of the more popular programs include “Listen Up” and “Encore!” which study operas, music genres and musicals, and “Balance and Brains,” which focuses on multi-dimensional health including improving balance and maintaining memory. In the later class, participants solve various brain teasers and puzzles while also working on balance and core exercises to improve strength.

Betty Leikam has been a resident at Cedar Lake Village for more than a year and says she enjoys all the activities and amenities offered from Wii bowling to the library.

“We always knew this was where we wanted to come,” Leikam says. “It’s a wonderful place.”

She adds that she appreciates the proximity to Olathe Health for medical care as well as how close it is to her church. She also appreciates the relationships she has been able to develop.

Good Samaritan Society–Olathe runs the skilled nursing facility, and Hoeger House provides the post-acute rehabilitation facility that focuses on physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy after surgery, injury, stroke or illness.

This year has presented significant challenges for all senior living facilities across the country, but Cedar Lake Village is adapting.

“We are doing our best to host a variety of different activities, while also keeping our residents safe by encouraging mask wearing, social distancing and hand hygiene,” says Deborah Beckwith, senior living director.

Before the pandemic, they also offered a choir, chimes choir and an acting troupe, and they hope to resume those in the future.

“Residents enjoy the semi-rural setting of Cedar Lake Village,” Beckwith says. “The benefit of being located ‘outside the city’ just a bit encourages residents to enjoy nature and the outdoors with our scenic pond, walking trails and wildlife. Residents also enjoy the ‘family’ environment we have created here. Many residents comment that the people of Cedar Lake Village make it a wonderful place to call home.”
