Holiday Home Design

Christmas is in the air, and all around the house

Stephani Raabe, showroom manager of Dahl Decor in Loveland, lends her decorating expertise to give us ideas  and tips on how to create a classy, fun and festive holiday look. She loves to make her home her own private little retreat, especially around Christmas.

Living room

I like to decorate in a way that makes Christmas feel magical, but not overwhelming. I like to incorporate things like paper snowflakes that my kids make, fresh pine and pine cones, and I love crisp white and warm wood tones. It’s kind of like bringing the outside in.

Make the room feel cozy with pillows and blankets that have some red flannel or some other subtle Christmas tones. Envision a cabin in winter, where it’s warm and comfy and inviting.

Dining room

I think it’s fun to do a full table setting and just leave it out, especially if you have a formal dining room. There would be placemats and napkins and wine glasses, and a natural pine centerpiece with candles. I also like to hang some accent pieces on my dining room walls such as some fun holiday photos from previous years.

In the china cabinet, show off your Christmas china if you have it, and also put in some twinkle lights and pops of ribbon.

Front porch

I would use pine with holly berries, some ribbon and, of course, a wreath, which is always glorious on a front door. If you have furniture on the front porch, accent it with outdoor pillows that are, once again, flannel colored. Set out some [flameless] candles, and don’t forget a welcome rug!

Start with a blank palette. Put away all your everyday décor and start fresh with your Christmas decorations. Be mindful of what you have - if you love it, keep it, and if you don’t, give it away.

If you have a staircase banister, wrap it in garland with ribbon and lights. You can also hang Christmas balls in one color to coordinate with the ribbon.

When at home, simmer a pot of cider, cinnamon sticks, fresh oranges and apples on the stove to get the scent of Christmas in the air. You can, of course, use scented candles as well.
