Influenced By Style

Charleston's style expert, Grace Atwood, gives us a peak into a day in her life.

What made you want to start your own lifestyle blog?

It was just a creative outlet at first. I started my blog back in 2010 when I was living in New York and working in the beauty industry. I worked for a large CPG company where I realized that my dream job may actually not be my dream. Naming nail polishes and developing shades, designing the in-store displays... but also a little bit miserable working in such a corporate environment. I am an introvert (I didn't even know about introverts vs. extroverts at the time) and was always drained. It was meeting after meeting and just feeling like I was on a hamster wheel.

My little refuge was my blog. I'd come home from a long day at work, pour a glass of wine, and sit in the quiet and write. It was cathartic to make little collages and share the things I loved. I had always loved sharing my latest product discoveries, and shopping finds with my girlfriends... this felt just like that but magnified. I never dreamed that it would become my full-time job.

What inspires you the most? Travel! And if I'm not traveling, reading (I find that books can be equally transportive).

Has your style changed at all since moving to Charleston? I would say that it has changed a bit to accommodate the weather. Summers here are no joke. I pretty much live in shorts and tanks or breezy dresses. You don't want anything touching your skin!

Do you have any favorite shops in Charleston you find yourself frequenting? Yes! I love Hampden Clothing for all things unique and high-end — Stacy has an amazing eye and always seems to have her finger on the pulse of what the next big thing is going to be. I also love Beau & Ro for gorgeous summer dresses, and Holst & Lee for jewelry. Speaking of jewelry, Croghan's is dangerous for me (I'm a bit of a magpie) but amazing. And, of course, Buxton Books!

You share that you love reading. Have you picked up any good books lately? The ACOTAR (A Court of Thorns and Roses) fantasy series has dominated my summer. It's fun, but read it when you have a lot of free time. Two other books I really loved were The Chateau (the best thriller I've read in ages!) and The Secret Book of Flora Lea.
