How Fitness Impacts Overall Wellness

The new decade is in full swing, and with the onset of 2020 came the “New Year, New Me” resolutions, many of which revolve around wellness and taking steps to become healthier. In my experience as a personal trainer, I believe setting these wellness goals is very important. Life seems to become more chaotic as the years go on, forcing people to sacrifice time for themselves in order to fulfill other obligations. A common sentiment that I hear from my clients is that fitness often falls to the wayside in these situations. While it may not seem like a big deal to ditch working out for a week, this decision causes a domino effect. Although there are many ways to improve your overall wellness, establishing a consistent workout routine is perhaps the most necessary ingredient for success. This is why I strongly believe in the benefits of taking the time to evaluate your current health and deciding where you want to go next. Regardless of the method, whether it’s finding a new health club, or getting a nutrition coach to help you reframe your diet, it’s important to be realistic with your expectations when you set these goals. Fitness means something different for everyone, and throughout my 11 years and counting as a personal trainer at Life Time, I have helped hundreds of people of all ages, at all levels, move forward on their fitness journeys and ultimately achieve their goals. The key takeaway? Regardless of what one’s goals are, whether they are focused on physical, mental, or emotional health, fitness should be a priority as it has benefits that impact every aspect of a person’s life. Physically, the benefits to establishing a regular workout routine are obvious. Whether you want to shed a few pounds, gain muscle, or train for an athletic event, when you incorporate fitness into your everyday routine, you will begin to notice a positive change in your physicality. Mentally and emotionally, working out reduces stress and releases endorphins in your body which heighten your mood and energy levels. Look at group fitness classes, which provide a supportive, reliable environment for our members to continue working towards their wellness goals. There is nothing more reassuring than knowing you have peers with similar values and work ethics to motivate you daily. When you start surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals you increase your ability and desire to progress. Wellness is a broad umbrella that encompasses many things, but fitness is the foundation. Once you take this step to establishing a consistent, targeted workout routine that aligns with your goals, this sense of control and motivation will seep into every aspect of your life. It can be daunting, especially with the countless types of workouts and fitness class offerings in the world today, but once you make yourself and your fitness regimen top priority, you will be well on your way to achieving a state of overall wellness.
