Where to Stay: Greece Edition

Unique places to rest your head if summer travel takes you to the Mediterranean

Greece, one of the most ancient civilizations, is steeped in history and home to some of the world’s bluest waters and most magical sunsets. Planning a trip island hopping can be daunting, with Mykonos’ legendary beach bars and Santorini’s sun-drenched shores perfect for romance and many other islands in between, all boasting their own unique appeal. To help give you a place to start your research planning a trip to Greece, or perhaps inspiring one, we’ve made a list of four hotels that add adventure to any trip. Moxy Athens City is new, fun and central; Blue Palace is in itself worth a trip to southern Crete; Ducato Wine Hotel & Villas is an excellent place to experience the growing popularity of  luxury ‘cave hotels’ and Ducato di Oia will simply take your breath away.

If you’re planning to go Greece, feel free to email me for a more comprehensive Google doc of tips and suggestions, from restaurants and activities, to ferry verse flying.

Moxy Athens City

Most trips to Greece begin in Athens. If you stay at Moxy, yours will start with a complimentary “Got Moxy” cocktail.  Whether you’re there for a day or three, the Moxy Athens City is an excellent home base. It only opened March 29 of this year so it’s brand new, vibrant, fun, trendy and walking distance to the Acropolis, the Parthenon and nearly anywhere else you may want to explore.

Blue Palace, Elounda

Blue Palace, a Luxury Collection Resort, is a slice of heaven in the southern Crete city of Elounda and a destination location well worth the trip – especially if looking to relax, adventure and recharge rather than crowded beach bars and late-night parties more popular in Mykonos.

There’s a private saltwater pool in each villa, several excellent restaurant options on the property as well as a host of water sports available from their private floating dock– so there’s no ’need’ to leave. But, from the luxury hotel guests can not only see Spinalonga Island, a now uninhabited island with a rich and fascinating history, but take a speed boat over from the hotel to explore it. Plaka, an adorable fishing village, is also only a short walk away and has several family-owned restaurants, like Taverna Giorgos, with the freshest of fish and friendliest of service.

Ducato Wine Hotel and Villas

Located in Megalochori, a charming traditional village in the heart of Santorini’s wine region, Ducato Wine Hotel and Villas offers a truly unique experience. The property consists of six villas that have each had a former use. The Stone House, a romantic hideaway for two, was built with volcanic stones, used to be a wine cellar –and the bathroom is where the grapes were stomped! Villa Lo has two-bedrooms, can accommodate six – and was once the village’s school! It’s been remodeled and now includes a large pool, cabana and hammock in the courtyard. While each villa has its own pool, Villa Jasmine is unique for its cave pool and The Mansion, which can accommodate 8, has a one-of-a kind barrel sauna. https://ducato.gr/

Ducato Di Oia

Oia, the location of sister property Ducator Di Oia, is home of arguably the most beautiful sunsets in the world. It’s a picturesque city of blue-domed churches and whitewashed buildings carved into the cliffs, Ducato’s 15 suites and 3 rooms among them. The boutique hotel overlooks the caldera and while on a quieter northern side of Santorini, the area is dotted with some of the island’s best restaurant and shops.
