Kelley Andrews-Edwards didn’t need another job. She was a full-time lawyer and mother to a baby girl. But she couldn’t let go of that look on her dad’s face when she and her brother surprised him with homemade oyster tables one Christmas. “I knew this was a niche market not being filled, because I would have been a customer!” That gut feeling resonated and, one day, she found herself at her computer crunching numbers and churning out a business plan which she emailed to the rest of her family. Were they in or out?
Oh, they were IN. Her brother is a co-owner and her husband stains and cures tables. “It’s definitely a team effort. I’m not doing the physical work but I was the fuel and motivation to get this off the ground.” For that, you can add Charleston grit to her resumé!
Although the tables were originally designed for the ultimate Lowcountry seasonal tradition, it quickly became apparent that they were so much more. Reimagined as a multi-functional outdoor entertainment table, they double beautifully as a charcuterie board, a beverage-serving table, or game table. Kelley used one as a party favor table at her daughter’s birthday party and as a tasting table where she sourced a Champagne bucket that fit perfectly into the center. The perfect wedding gift, the table can be engraved with the couple’s names and wedding date. It’s easy to visualize this table as a stunning centerpiece at any event.
Each table is lovingly handcrafted, stained, and cured; a unique artisanal piece with its own serial number burnt into it on the backside. “I have so many great memories of oyster roasts growing up,” Kelley says. It’s such a fun, communal experience and so different from sitting at a table.”
Although they come in three standard sizes and several stain options, Charleston Oyster Tables will work with you for a custom-build, including a specific color palette. Traveling for your oyster roast location? Each table’s legs fold under, making them easier to transport and store.
