My Artsy Valentine

Treat Your Love to a Night Out with Local Arts Organizations This Month

Got Valentine's Day plans? Don't even think about another movie night on the couch! Skip the boring old Netflix and instead follow Cupid's arrow to one of the plentiful mid-February events featuring the creative talents of Roaring Fork Valley musicians, teaching artists, actors, and more. Because nothings says 'romance' like a good, old-fashioned night on the town—and when it involves our local arts community, all the better. Here are our picks, whether you're looking to splurge or save on date night:

Splurge: The perfect Valentine's Day gift this year is a pair of tickets to Symphony in the Valley's 25th anniversary Symphony Swing gala. Wine, dine, and dance the night away to big band music during one of the most romantic local events of the year.

  • February 23 at 6 p.m., Hotel Colorado, Glenwood. $85/single, $150/couple for general admission or $125/single, $225/couple for VIP admission with special seating, complimentary champagne, and a special gift. SITV.org

Save: Glenwood's Community Concert Association is a hidden downvalley gem, bringing acclaimed musical acts to town throughout the year. This month, baritone Leon Williams presents a variety of selections from Broadway to the Great American Songbook.

  • February 12 at 7 p.m., Mountain View Church, Glenwood. Admission by season membership in the association: $40/adult, $15/student, $90/family. GSConcertAssn.org

Splurge: The dark nights of winter are made more bearable by the Aspen Laugh Festival, which brings popular comedian Jim Gaffigan to the valley for two performances on Valentine's Day weekend this year. (Parents will particularly enjoy his material, which often centers on fatherhood.)

  • February 15 at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Wheeler Opera House, Aspen. $88/general admission. WheelerOperaHouse.com

Save: Colorado Mountain College's Sopris Theatre Company combines the talents of students and local professionals to greatly entertaining effect. Check out the opening weekend of "The Nerd" by Larry Shue, a comedy about a bumbling oaf of a party guest who outstays his welcome.

  • February 15, 16, 22 & 23 at 7 p.m. and February 17 & 24 at 2 p.m., New Space Theatre at CMC Spring Valley campus. $18/adults, $13/students and seniors. ColoradoMtn.edu

Get Creative

Splurge: Whether you're an Instagram-obsessed millenial couple or two baby boomers wanting to punch up your tech skills, The Art Base's iPhone Photography course is a fun way to learn how to take better photos together. Photographer Summers Moore teaches beginner, intermediate, and advanced lessons.

  • February 2, 23, and March 2 from 12:30-4:30 p.m., The Art Base, Basalt. $150/members, $165/non-members for the three-class series. Classes may also be taken individually. TheArtBase.org

Save: Make like Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze in the 1990 film "Ghost" (you know the scene!) at the Carbondale Clay Center's couples' night event on Valentine's Day weekend. Wine, chocolates, fruit, cheese, materials, instruction, an hour at the wheel, and more are all included while the movie rolls in the background.

  • February 15 from 6-9 p.m. at the Carbondale Clay Center. $30/person. Reserve your spot by calling 970.963.2529 or emailing Info@CarbondaleClay.org. CarbondaleClay.org

For the Kids

Splurge: Camp Smashbox's two "Saturdate Nights" that sandwich Valentine's Day week provide a prime opportunity for parents to enjoy a mini-escape together. Drop children ages 5-12 off to do creative play and snow activities while mom and dad have an evening out sans kiddos.

  • February 9 & 16 from 3-9 p.m., Snowmass Base Village Mountain Collective building. $119/drop-in (siblings 15 percent off). Space is limited; register early at CampSmashbox.com

Save: Head to Anderson Ranch just before the holiday for a sweet afternoon of hot cocoa, cookies, and heart-shaped card-making with the whole fam.

  • February 12 from 3:30-5 p.m., Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Snowmass. Free. AndersonRanch.org
