Four generations of a local family this year are happily celebrating the 60th anniversary of their West Chester personal care business. Current professionals at Peter's Salon & European Spa say they delight in providing clients with pleasing, personalized results that come from combining their honed experience with contemporary styles, techniques and products.
Starting this family legacy was Ludwig "Lou" and Maria Thiel, who first operated Lou's Barbershop. Their son, Peter, and his wife, Alice Thiel, then were among the first Philadelphia-region businesses in 1962 to offer complete and true European day spa and salon services. Although the Thiels since retired, leadership of Peter's transferred to their son, Michael, and the salon is still all about providing complete personal attention to every guest.
"Our parents were an ambitious, forward-thinking couple that immigrated from Europe. They spread passion about beauty to everyone," says third-generation co-owner Michael Thiel, who manages the salon/spa with his sisters Tina, Suzanne and Karin.
"Our clients view their hair, face and skin as a beneficial investment. And we feel very fortunate that clients trust us as experts to turn those investments into their best assets," says Tina.
From their location at 1009 West Chester Pike West, their beauty professionals provide a range of services, including hair, skin, body and nail care in a luxurious environment. They specialize in cosmetic makeovers as well as hair coloring -- including low light techniques and highlights.
Michael started working at Peter's while attending high school. He even met his future wife, Carol, when she interviewed for a job at the salon. Tina, Suzanne, Karin and Michael are actually third-generation hairstylists, starting with their grandparents on their father's side; two now also have daughters as fourth-generation stylists.
"As co-owner, my wife operates and manages our barbershop, which was started by my grandfather--she's keeping his legacy alive," adds Michael.
He says every service, product and technique is meticulously selected and combined with expertly trained, experienced personnel.
"We pride ourselves in being a business where everyone is treated as a friend. It's a very comfortable and inviting environment. The spa was created by my mother, who felt it was the future of the salon industry to incorporate skin and body care as part of overall health and wellness. Our spa is much like our salon in that it's warm and professional, with an emphasis on each individual's specific needs," Michael says.
