From being named one of the “Best Places to Live in the U.S.” to its recognition as one of the nation’s “Top Towns for Families,” Cary has claimed the top spot of many “best of” lists over the years.

The town has no shortage of fun activities for families, says Dwayne Jones, head of recreation for the Town of Cary. Dwayne has worked for the town for more than 20 years and has witnessed, firsthand, its growth not only in population but also programming.

“We listen to our community on what types of events and activities they want to see,” Dwayne says. “We understand our families want to be active, so we provide plenty of choices for our residents to enjoy, from sports-focused day camps for kids to cultural events downtown for families.”

This summer, Downtown Cary Park is buzzing on select Wednesday nights with its Park After Dark series, featuring food trucks and live entertainment. Prefer the water? Head to the Bond Park Boathouse on the first Friday of the month now through October for Bands, Bites & Boats, where families can enjoy after-hours boat rentals while listening to great music and enjoying local fare.

Prefer to explore on your own? Grab the family and head downtown. Cary Community Library offers fun events like Preschool Storytime and Learning with Legos. Grab a hot dog and homemade orangeade at longtime Cary staple Ashworth Drugs before stopping by Cary Arts Center to check out the most recent gallery exhibitions. Want a sweet treat before heading home? Stop by Annelore’s German Bakery for a freshly baked pastry or FRESH for a scoop of local ice cream.

Soon Downtown Cary will have even more to offer as the town recently began the design process for expanding Downtown Park, which will include a “great lawn” for outdoor activities, a small amphitheater for concerts and performances, four different water features, a restaurant and more. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2020 with a completion date of 2022.

“From the start, our goal as a town has been to offer the highest quality programs,” Dwayne says. “We go the extra mile to ensure we have the best instructors and amenities, while paying attention to all those little details to ensure our families have an enjoyable time together at our facilities.”
