Outdoor Kitchens and Backyard Delights

Outdoor Living Spaces Are All the Rage These Days

If an outdoor entertainment area or outdoor kitchen is on your list of things to do around the house, you might want to get started on that sooner than later.

According to Scott Hunter of Palmetto Outdoor Kitchens of Mount Pleasant, the construction of outdoor living spaces and kitchens is booming this year. The busy season for contracting a new space ramps up in January and February, with construction beginning in March.

But due to high demand, you might want to get the ball rolling in November and December.

"A lot of people didn't go on vacation this year for obvious reasons, so they rolled that money into RVs, boats and backyard construction," said Hunter. "Also, we are seeing a lot of people moving to South Carolina, and the number of homes on the market is pretty low. People find they can't find a home they like better than their existing home, so they are taking their equipty and investing it in the house they have."

In September alone, Palmetto had four backyard living spaces jobs that exceeded $100,000 each. The demand is high not only for residential homes, but for multi-family apartment complexes and condos as well.

For the jobs Palmetto Outdoor Kitchens are doing, one out of 10 include a pavilion cover of some sort. Many of the outdoor kitchens are stand-alone structures, and having a cover of some sort adds shelter.

Other trends to consider when planning your outdoor kitchen include:

* The new outdoor kitchens are less of a deck or patio and are instead an extension of the family’s living space.

* A new trend is to install both a gas and a traditional grill, giving the backyard chef more options.

* Outdoor kitchens are becoming fully functional cooking spaces, with built-in ice makers, sinks, refrigerators and even trash disposals.

Palmetto Outdoor Kitchens is a full-service designer and builder of outdoor kitchens with grills available from FireMagic, AOG, Kamado Joe and TEC. They also have distribution rights for the WerEver cabinet line for seven counties in South Carolina, one of the best weatherproof cabinetry for outdoor kitchens.
