There are few experiences more exhilarating than introducing a new puppy to the household, and Jeff Adler knows all about it. As an accomplished local dog trainer and owner of Off Leash K9 Training, his ability to train both people and pets about ways to make the most of their new relationship is making waves around Greater Cincinnati.
Thinking of a new pup this Christmas? He’s got a few tips on what to do when introducing a young dog to your home.
“Prior to bringing your pup home, dog-proof your home,” Jeff recommends. “Set up a crate, install baby gates to limit areas the dog can access, take up anything loose on the floor the dog might chew on, and make sure there are no dangerous chemicals the dog can get into. Remember—the most important dog-proofing you can provide is 100% supervision.”
Take it easy
“When meeting new family members, it’s easy for a dog to be overwhelmed,” Jeff says. “Introduce one person at a time, letting the dog come to each person on his or her own. Be patient—give your dog time to get used to his new family and environment.”
“Start a routine right away—it’s important to teach boundaries and structure from day one. Professional trainers like us can help, too.” Jeff explains that common routine and boundary training can include potty time, basic obedience, and walks to become familiar with surroundings.
“Be observant of your dog’s movements, activity and behavior,” Jeff finishes. “This allows you to notice any behavior issues such as reactivity, food/toy aggression, how your dog responds to noises and movement, and how he or she responds to humans and other animals.”
