Creativity is in full bloom at KC Maker Studio and Retreats, a full-service bed and breakfast with a focus on quilting and crafting retreats.
Situated in Kansas City’s historic Valentine neighborhood, forward-thinking seamstress and hostess Patti Meier is the brainchild of the concept, along with her husband Dana. She teaches a variety of beginner sewing, quilting and weaving classes, and their four rooms, available through Airbnb, can accommodate groups of eight eager to hunker down in the Maker Workroom, break out their needles and start creating.
“We've outfitted the studio with high quality vibration free tables, commercial quality adjustable chairs, and design walls to layout their quilt blocks,” Patti says.
Quilting is generally a solitary hobby, and quilting retreats have become popular as a way to help quilters socialize while they sew. After attending a few retreats that were all several hours away, Patti realized there weren’t many options in the Kansas City area. So she decided to combine her Airbnb with her sewing studio to provide a place for quilters to gather.
“This is truly a creative haven, in every sense of the word,” Patti says. “The guest rooms are designed and decorated with your comfort in mind. Sleep in super comfortable beds, get cozy in front of the TV to watch a movie, or spend as much time as you want exploring your creativity in our Maker Workroom.
“Need some fresh air?" continues Pattie. "Go for a walk through the Westport Historic District or take in some shopping at the Country Club Plaza. Or just relax on the front porch or back patio.”
Retreats are held Thursday through Sunday, which allows Pattie to teach lessons Monday through Wednesday.
