About an hour and a half southeast of Oklahoma City, you'll find the small town of Sulphur, OK. Most people think of the area as a nature lover's paradise, offering visitors hiking, bison watching, and even natural hot springs and mineral waters in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area.
For those wanting to explore the beauty of nature while still staying in luxurious accommodations, the Artesian Hotel Casino & Spa offers the perfect retreat for relaxation, dining, and even a little pampering.
In 1906 the original Artesian hotel was built at 1001 W. First Street to accommodate the recent influx of tourists, traveling from across the country to visit the newly established Platt National Park, now known as the Chickasaw Recreation Area. The hotel was a haven for rich and famous guests seeking an elegant retreat in the middle of the country. Visitors included movie stars like Roy Rogers and John Wayne as well as former President William Howard Taft.
In 1962 however, the hotel was destroyed by a fire that burned it to the ground. More than 50 years later, the Chickasaw Nation decided to bring the old hotel back to life on that same historic corner, and in August of 2013, the new Artesian opened its doors.
The 81-room boutique hotel now offers amenities that you would expect to find in larger tourist destinations. The property features an exciting casino floor, modernized bathhouse, full-service spa, spacious banquet room, indoor/outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, Fountain Club Lounge, and a variety of unique shops and dining options, including The Springs, the high-end dining room led by executive chef Theron Jessop.
An overnight stay at the Artesian is luxurious in any of the 81 guest rooms. The hotel offers four suites as well as junior suites, double queen, standard king, and executive king options. They also offer an "Art of Romance" wine and chocolate package, available to add to any room booking.
The 15,000-square-foot casino floor is open 24 hours and offers over 300 of the most popular electronic games, as well as three classic tables.
My favorite part of any getaway is exploring delicious dining options, and Springs at the Artesian does not disappoint. Executive chef Theron Jessop offers an upscale regional menu with a wide range of menu items sure to please any palate. Comfort foods such as fried green tomatoes, Southern-fried catfish, chicken pot pie, a fantastic pot roast, and homestyle meatloaf sit aside steaks, citrus glazed salmon, grilled bone-in pork chops, pasta Pomodoro, and shrimp scampi linguini on the menu. For those who love a great burger, their three options include Angus or wagyu beef, and an Impossible burger for those seeking a meatless option. A variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and sides round out the dinner menu. A diverse wine list and full bar provide the perfect pairing option for every meal. Breakfast offerings range from biscuits and housemade country sausage gravy to omelets, huevos rancheros, pancakes, waffles, and more.
For those who love to browse a lovely boutique, the Shops at the Artesian offer fashion and shoes, housewares and Okie-made products, teas, spices, and other gourmet treats, sweets, and a convenient sundries shop.
While the weather in Oklahoma this time of year may or may not cooperate with nature lovers looking to hike the trails of the recreation area, it is the perfect time for a romantic getaway at The Artesian. The hotel is currently offering some specials for Valentine's weekend.

The original Artesian Hotel gained popularity for the area's natural springs where guests could soak and relax. More than a century later, the beautiful modern-day bathhouse features a unique oversized whirlpool with six seating areas, which can accommodate four to six people each. A stone waterfall and LED lighting enhance the sensory experience.
While many hotels offer traditional day spas, Sole'renity also offers a children's spa so that younger guests can feel pampered as well. Sole'renity was the only Oklahoma spa to be named one of America's top 100 spas of 2018. The spa offers massages, facials, body wraps and scrubs, manicures & pedicures, oxygen treatments, as well as make-up, lash, and brow services.
Whether you want breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just a snack, the dining options at The Artesian have you covered. In addition to the gourmet experience at Springs, the resort offers Bedré Cafe, a malt shop featuring sandwiches, wraps, sundaes, shakes, and malts to the tunes from the jukebox.
The Fountain Club is the perfect place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail in between hands at one of the casino's game tables, or before dinner at Springs. If you don't have dinner plans or want a small bite while you enjoy your libations, The Fountain Club also offers appetizers and sandwiches.
