Service Above Self

Laguna Niguel Rotary Club Supports the COANIQUEM Burned Children Foundation in Chile

Most people are familiar with the Rotary Club and the good deeds it does in service to our local community. But you may not be aware of the organization’s involvement in assisting humanitarian projects around the world. One such initiative is the COANIQUEM Burned Children Foundation.

COANIQUEM is an organization based in Chile that provides aid to child burn victims (coaniquem.cl). The COANIQUEM Burned Children Foundation (burnedchildren.org) is a US-based foundation that provides financial support for COANIQUEM.

With medical facilities in three locations in Chile, COANIQUEM has rehabilitated more than 140,000 children since the organization was founded over 40 years ago.

COANIQUEM combines medical attention, restorative healing, and comprehensive rehabilitation programs to treat physical and psychological scars in child burn victims.

Trained professionals from a wide range of specializations are part of the multidisciplinary staff: medical doctors, registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and social workers.

Laser Technology Fund

In February of this year, COANIQUEM began adopting a revolutionary new treatment for scar tissues utilizing laser technology to treat scars on burned children. By creating micro-perforations on the tissue, the scar remains softer and more pliable, allowing healthy tissue to grow around and beneath it. This treatment speeds recovery and the possibilities of reducing scarring are greatly enhanced. It also reduces the number of follow-up surgeries needed.

The Laguna Niguel Rotary Club, through its partnership with Rotary International and the Rotary Club of Santiago, Chile, played an integral role in raising the $214,000 needed to fund this new laser technology.

“Thanks to Rotary's continued support, COANIQUEM has made important advances in technology to improve patient care,” said Luis Acuña Labraña, president of the Rotary Club of Santiago, Chile. “The Rotary network has played an important role in the necessary logistics to bring patients with severe burn injuries from abroad to receive treatment at COANIQUEM, as well as in contacting professionals for the international training program in the rehabilitation of pediatric burns.”
