South Coast Repertory Goes Live!

Experience Theatre Live and Outdoors at Historic Mission San Juan Capistrano this Summer

South Coast Repertory’s 2021 summer season looks different than any other time in its 57-year history. The award-winning theatre company and historic landmark Mission San Juan Capistrano created a unique experience for theatre-goers this summer called Outside SCR. This summer, two-family productions will be performed under the stars in San Juan Capistrano - American Mariachi and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. These are the first live theatre productions held at the Mission since 1924, and they are the first live productions for SCR since the pandemic shutdown.

Mission San Juan Executive Director Mechelle Lawrence-Adams says, “New history is being made with this special partnership where the arts meet history and the net effect leaves a one-of-a-kind experience supporting both historic preservation and theatre.”

American Mariachi is a big-hearted comedy with live music as young women in the 70’s dream big and embrace the transcendent power of music. Recommended for ages 12 and older it will be held on July 15, 17, 23, 25, 29, and 31.

Based on Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz, the musical You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown features the whole gang—Lucy, Linus, Snoopy, and of course, Charlie Brown. Appropriate for ages four and older, performance dates are July 16, 18, 22, 24, 30, and Aug. 1.

Led by Artistic Director David Ivers and Managing Director Paula Tomei, South Coast Repertory is widely recognized as one of the leading professional theatres in the country.

“The past year has been challenging and, at the same time, presented opportunities for creative growth,” said Ivers.

This summer season will provide stimulating theatrical experiences - hallmarks of SCR while meeting the unique needs of Orange County at this time. SCR consulted with UCI Health to ensure the highest level of safety for artists, staff, and audiences.

“After a year-long hiatus, it feels so good to be back,” says Tomei.

Discounted subscriptions for Outside SCR range from $19-$35 per ticket (special pricing for 25 and under). Single tickets are available at scr.org or call (714) 708-5555.
