The Custom Menswear Experience for the Sharp-Dressed Man

Formal Affair of West Springfield Takes Men's Style to the Next Level

For men who are concerned about quality and fit in their suits and formal wear, the West Springfield business Formal Affair, located at 581 Westfield Street just past Liquori’s Pizza, offers a total experience that ensures a custom fit and complete satisfaction. Owner Kevin Kousch opened Formal Affair in 2008 after Yale Genton closed and he saw an opportunity to provide men in Western Massachusetts with in-stock inventory and custom tailoring. Yale Genton’s highly experienced tailor, Zeza, followed to become Formal Affair’s in-house tailor.

In 2016, Kevin completely remodeled his store and offers full service with both fine suits for sale and a rental division for events such as wedding and proms. Because Formal Affair has all of its attire in stock at the store, even last-minute needs can be fulfilled. Customers can see and touch all of their options instead of taking their chances on items that are at a separate warehouse. And Kevin doesn’t just take care of your suiting needs; he also has in-stock shoes, ties, vests, suspenders, and other accessories to complete your look to perfection.

Upon arrival, every Formal Affair customer is measured and consulted about their desired look, be it a traditional fit or the newly popular slim fit. Color coordination with accessories and customers’ wedding or prom partners’ outfits is also carefully considered. Kevin keeps abreast of all the latest trends, brands, colors and accessories and is a stickler for the in-person experience.

For customers that choose to purchase their suits, Formal Affair’s vast in-stock inventory is a huge hit. Kevin and his staff help customers choose accessories to complete the package as a rental of shirts, shoes, ties, suspenders and vests. They carry the popular, high-quality brands Hart Schaffner Marx, Mantoni, Peerless Clothing, Tallia, Giorgio Fiorelli, Carlo Russo and more. For the fall, they’re planning to stock Jack Victor, Hugo Boss, Calvin Klein, Armani and many other brands. We asked Kevin to share his experience about current trends:

What is popular right now in men’s formal wear?

For weddings, the new navy blue tuxedo rental is the most popular, with black as second choice. I’m seeing a lot of bright colors in ties: bright salmon, blue paisley, and stripes, as well as bow ties in bright yellows and pinks with matching suspenders and pocket squares. Traditional charcoal and black is still a popular choice for very formal events. Fashion shoes with short, slim pants seem to be the number one new trend right now.

What trends are different now?

Slim pants are in versus wide pants; pleats have been out for years, but the single-pleat pant is gaining popularity. In suits and formalwear, solids are hot, but plaids are through the roof. We do not see a lot of white at the moment. All shades of blue are in and brown is making its way back. Plaid pants are on the rise. The traditional navy blazer is still in but now with a tight, updated fit with cuffs showing. Long sleeves on coats are out. Show those cuffs!

Why is tailoring so important?

You can buy many things online, but it is almost always problematic in terms of size and fit. Formal Affair carries on the tradition of outfitting all our guests with our in-house tailor shop. Choose a suit from us and you can have our tailor give you the exact fit and look you desire. Formal Affair is one of the last brick-and-mortar retail businesses in the area that offers this level of service to make sure our guests look their best.

Formal Affair will be offering an extensive sale from mid-July through September. They can be reached at 413.781.4889,, and on Facebook at Formal Affair Clothier and Tailoring.
