A Dog Owner’s Experience with Richmond’s Finest Dog Trainer, Paul Hearn

Introducing a new furry companion to the family is an exciting decision, but it also requires significant changes and adjustments to a new lifestyle. With the help of a professional like Paul Hearn from Dog Training Elite Richmond, the transition to dog ownership can be easier and more enjoyable. Midlothian Lifestyle got the opportunity to chat with Carol Straus, a Dog Training Elite client, who shared her experience working with Paul. Read on for Carol’s insights on Paul and Richmond’s most elite dog training service!

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT PAUL HEARN AT DOG TRAINING ELITE?

While conducting a Google search, I discovered Paul through numerous positive reviews. There are several dog trainers out there, but I wanted to use a reputable company with proven methods.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO HIRE A DOG TRAINER?

Having recently recovered from shoulder surgery, I wanted to teach my dog, Dunkin, how to stay with me on a normal leash and not pull.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE PAUL SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR DOG TRAINING NEEDS?

I chose Paul because of his thoughtful interactions with Dunkin and me. He quickly identified Dunkin's strengths and weaknesses, provided me with easy-to-follow homework, and reinforced the desired behaviors with positive repetitions. I absolutely loved Paul’s method of positive praise and the "yes" that comes after every correct behavior.

DID PAUL MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS DURING THE TRAINING PROCESS? HOW SO?

Absolutely.  I was concerned about Dunkin’s safety since we live on a large property with horses and frequent deliveries. I wanted to make sure that his "come" and "place" commands were well-practiced to avoid any accidents. Thanks to Paul, Dunkin has been exceptionally patient around the horses and has not chased after any cars or trucks!

WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH PAUL?

As part of his training packages, Paul includes weekly group sessions, and those have been invaluable! It has been amazing to witness all the dogs transform with Paul’s guided instruction. We have a saying in the horse world: if you aren't training your horse, you're "un-training" it. I feel the same way about dogs. Consistency and positive reinforcement are the best things, and I don't think you're ever done making your dog the best!

DID PAUL'S SERVICES HELP YOU FEEL LESS STRESSED DURING THE DOG TRAINING PROCESS?

Absolutely. Paul's amicable personality, combined with his proficient knowledge, made everything seem effortless. He was very systematic and always told me what to expect and what to work on the whole way through.

WHAT SURPRISED YOU THE MOST ABOUT PAUL'S APPROACH TO DOG TRAINING?

I think there's a standard fear and dislike of electronic collars because so many people use them punitively.  Paul was very careful in selecting the right approach to e-collar training. Our ultimate goal was to gradually reduce the use of the e-collar. We hardly ever use it, but when we do, Dunkin understands that he needs a reminder and responds positively.

IF SOMEONE ASKED YOU ABOUT WORKING WITH PAUL, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THEM?

I absolutely recommend Paul! The results are life-changing. He showed me practical ways to deal with unwanted dog behaviors, and living with a well-behaved dog has been a pure joy. Yes, there's work to get it done, but it is SO worth it!

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO ADD OR SHARE?

I don't think I would enjoy my dog as much as I do without Paul's training. It's amazing to see how he has helped so many clients and their dogs during group classes. It’s not magic, and it takes dedication at home, but Paul is always there to guide you!

If you're struggling with your dog's behavior and want to address issues such as leash and potty training, destructive chewing and digging, staying and coming, or stealing objects, then Paul is the expert you need! He can also help you with problems like barking, howling, and whining; food guarding and begging; mouthing, nipping, and playing rough; anxiety; submissive urination, jumping up; hyperactivity; and aggression. With Paul's support, you can work towards developing a happier and healthier relationship with your furry friend.
