Western Wanderlust

Choose Your Own Adventure with Colorado Overlander

Access. For Glenwood Springs resident Patrick Drake, who grew up immersed in the high country paradise that is the Roaring Fork Valley, having access to the outdoors is key. The ability to experience our most beautiful and beloved wild lands firsthand, he believes, helps us not only enrich our lives but form a better understanding of the place we call home.

“And for visitors coming here from out of town, there is just so much more to see beyond the I-70 corridor from Denver,” he says. “A lot of Colorado, and the greater western U.S., is missed due to lack of access—whether people don’t have the right vehicle or gear, or the knowledge of how to get out where the paved road ends. Open country is right outside our door but sometimes it just takes a little help to get there.”

So almost a year ago, Drake and his three partners (brother Chris Drake, brother-in-law Zach Neal, and close friend Jason Smith) founded Colorado Overlander to help more locals and visitors simply go out and explore. The team helps facilitate self-reliant overland trips through off-road vehicle and gear rentals, planning assistance, insiders’ tips, and safety advice. Basically, if you’ve got a dream to truly see the state or experience a bucket-list adventure, they can help make it happen.

“Our goal is to help people experience Colorado and the west for what it really is,” Drake says. “We suggest our own ideas for trips, from the big national parks to the lesser-known places, to try to ignite the possibilities but ultimately it’s up to each of our clients to experience their own overland adventure. We just give them the tools to do it, and hopefully help them remember that sometimes the best experiences aren’t about a landing destination; they’re about the journey.”
