Where Hope Lives

Cancer House of Hope Provides Support and Care

A cancer diagnosis often brings with it fear, pain, and endless questions. West Springfield’s Cancer House of Hope is an environment where members can come to receive support, treatment, and tools to navigate the challenging path ahead. CHH program director Margaret Toomey leads a team of staff and volunteers who are dedicated to the comfort of their members. The organization, located in a cozy house on Westfield Street, offers yoga classes, bra and prosthesis fitting, support groups, specialized massage therapy, art classes, professionally fitted wigs, and much more.

The independent nonprofit has been supporting members since 1999. Margaret emphasizes that CHH members are fighting all kinds of cancer and that services provided are sponsored through fundraising efforts such as the annual golf tournament at Twin Hills or the Luminaria event in December.

“We plan to broaden our hours to offer night therapies,” says Margaret. The list of member resources is long, and “everything is not for everyone,” according to Margaret. For example, CHH offers therapeutic horseback riding, kayaking, pickleball, and other activities. One of the most well-known services is the wig boutique, which provides fittings done by professional stylists. Like all of the offerings at CHH, wigs are available at no cost to members.

In addition to the services, classes, donated items, and support programs, CHH also has gardens and a pond where members can meditate or enjoy the outdoors. A canine ambassador, Abby, is available for snuggles for those members who enjoy dogs.
