The Junior League of Richmond is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through effective action and trained volunteer leadership. Founded in 1926 with 59 women, JLR now boasts over 600 members representing women from all walks of life. Our shared passion for serving those in need and supporting the Richmond community has united us these past 96 years, through depressions, wars, cultural revolutions, and pandemics. We're excited for what the next 96 years will bring!

JLR serves through our current scope of Women Helping Women, partnering with other organizations where collaboration makes sense. For example, JLR works with Shalom Farms and the YWCA to connect women served by the YWCA with local produce while providing recipes and kitchen equipment to build confidence as they transition from domestic violence shelters to independent housing.

Our members provide, on average, over 2,000 hours of volunteering annually, serving more than 13,000 community members. JLR’s thrift store, the Clothes Rack, provides reduced or no-cost professional attire to economically disadvantaged women for professional advancement. Our mobile store often travels directly to communities, recognizing that women often work hours that make regular shopping difficult, and that transportation can be a challenge.

Members often cite their interest in making connections with like-minded women as their initial motivation for joining JLR.  However, it’s the community engagement and ability to support other women that drives their desire to become leaders and continue to make the community the best it can be.

This month, JLR's 77th annual Book & Author Event is raising funds to support its work, and JLR gratefully acknowledges Dominion Energy, the event's presenting sponsor. The event takes place in person and virtually on May 12 at Tuckahoe Women's Club, 4215 Dover Road, Richmond. Festivities begin with a cocktail hour at 6:30 p.m. (including a virtual wine tasting in partnership with Richmond-based RichWine), followed by the event at 7:30.
