Youth Fitness: How To Get Started

Key tips for youth training from a collegiate athlete and GYMGUYZ trainer

Youth fitness is very important in youth development. Youth fitness provides numerous benefits such as weight management, improved confidence, increasing athletic ability and possible injury prevention. Fitness for youth doesn’t always take place at the gym, it is all about getting out and getting active. A great way to get out and stay active are through sports, hiking, bowling, or anything to get your body moving. Being a former collegiate athlete I have learned the three valuable keys to improving fitness in kids and young teens and these include consistency, hard work, and most importantly keeping things fun.

Consistency:

Fitness for any age group is a lifestyle. Young athletes are full of energy. You should get moving everyday even if it is only for 10 minutes; get active everyday.

Hard work:

Give your physical fitness 100% effort. The more you put in the more you will get out of it. Don’t cheat yourself, always give your all.

Fun:

Fitness should be fun. Find something active you love to do. There is something for everyone whether its bowling, running, or even playing a game of tag. Find what you enjoy and do it.

Workouts

#1 Walking: Walking is a great way to get active and improve fitness. Walking has many benefits such as reducing risk of heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure etc. A great way to start walking is to get out and explore. Find a trail, neighborhood, or park and start walking!

#2 Running: Running is also a great way to improve fitness. It is more challenging than walking but has many benefits including: strengthening bones and muscles, improving cardiovascular fitness, and helps maintain a healthy weight. A great way to start running is to set small goals for yourself. For example, start off with two minutes of light jogging then start to slowly add a minute as it starts to become easier.

#3 Personal Training: personal training is fantastic for improving fitness. Personal training has many of the same benefits as walking or running and with added benefits such as guidance and coaching to help keep you safe, fun and exciting workouts, and a great community to make new friends. To get started with a personal trainer look for personal training services such as GYMGUYZ Williamsburg who are all certified personal trainers or go to your local gym, many gyms also offer personal training or group training.
