Understanding Martial Arts Through a Holistic Approach

The Crabapple Martial Arts Academy

We caught up with the staff at Crabapple Martial Arts Academy to find out more about the programming and benefits of martial arts training. It's all about self-discipline, leadership and confidence. Here's our interview with them.

AL: What are a few misconceptions people might have about getting started with a martial arts program?

Crabapple Martial Arts Academy: There are multiple misconceptions people have about martial arts training or getting started in martial arts.  First, many people think that martial arts are just for kids.  Our martial arts program is a family pursuit where the entire family can learn and grow together while also getting in better physical shape.

Also, all martial arts academies are not the same.  Our martial arts program is a one of a kind program that takes a holistic approach with each student to teach fundamental skills such as self-discipline, leadership, self-control, self-confidence, self-defense, and physical fitness.  There is not another program or activity that teaches these skills with the success that Crabapple Martial Arts Academy has.

Finally, most people think that martial arts are just about blocking, kicking, grappling, and punching, when the true martial artist student is studying for self-improvement in nearly every aspect of their life.  These martial skills are merely a catalyst for change within the student.  Through learning martial skills and working on personal improvement, a student is set up to achieve pursuits they had previously never thought they were capable of.

AL: There are physical and mental benefits of martial arts. How do you address each during a workout?

Crabapple: Each class begins with bowing into class.  This is a key process, not only because it is the groundwork to building respect for the teachers and fellow students, but also because it primes the brain to focus on the skills and lessons of the day so they can fully be present and begin to de-stress from their day.

Next, the class begins with a physical warm-up which includes calisthenics, stretching, and light cardiovascular work.  Once the student is warmed up sufficiently, the class begins working on various martial skills based on the skill level of the class.  Throughout the class time, each student is pushed to expect their best effort and always give 110% of their abilities.  This causes each student to always expect to do their best and recognize when they can do better.  At times, skills work can be quite challenging, however, Crabapple Martial Arts Academy instructors are bar none the best-qualified instructors around to help each student, regardless of abilities work through their challenges and achieve what they set out to do.  It is through these small victories, students learn that hard work pays off and that just because someone is hard, does not mean they should not attempt to accomplish it.

Finally, each class ends with an activity that for younger students appears to be a game, but typically has a larger purpose.  Typically, each activity is designed to teach a specific skill or set of skills in a practical way, followed by “mat chat” to discuss topics such as leadership, bully prevention, perseverance, as well as myriad other topics depending on the needs and lesson plan of the class.

AL: We are so glad you're in Alpharetta. How did you choose Alpharetta as your business home?

Crabapple: Owner and Chief Instructor, C. Matthew White, Renshi opened Crabapple Martial Arts Academy in 2013 after leaving a career in law enforcement.  After having served his community in a reactionary role as a police officer and police detective, Renshi White decided he wanted to take a more proactive role in his community.  So he decided to open Crabapple Martial Arts Academy.  Renshi White saw the need for a traditional martial arts academy that delivered the highest quality instruction.
