Designer shares a story of how meaningful art becomes the jewels of an interior design project

Working with the Campbell family on their home was such a joy! Carole, a Financial Master Data Manager, and her husband, Marcus, a Pharmacist, have three kids: Marissa (22), Robert (20), and Andrew (18).

Much to my surprise, Carole informed me that several designers turned down her project. When she used the word “spooky” as one of her descriptive words for her style, I was immediately drawn in! I get so excited about projects that allow me to push myself and work with a different style. We used bright colors to bring a fun and playful aspect and mixed them with dark colors, including the black formal living room, to add drama and an overall spooky vibe.

Carole also wanted to make sure that her teenage children would have artwork on her walls that represented the black community. We ended up finding some absolutely stunning pieces and Carole chose to invest in art that would represent her family. These paintings were so gorgeous that they without a doubt had to be the centerpiece of the design. Each piece of art tells a story, and that is my favorite part of the Campbell’s home.

During the design process, I spotted the Civil Rights movement statues and just knew that Carole would want them! I sent her a picture right away and we snagged them up. They required some restoration, but they are such a prominent piece of history and present times that I knew we had to incorporate them somewhere.

Carole and her family were thrilled with the end results of the design (even though her kids are still getting used to the statues). The bright colors, dramatic features, and gorgeous art truly make for a unique family home.
