Who doesn’t love a beautifully styled tablescape?! Especially in a formal dining space, but really any dining space, having the places set elevates the room and also gives you a way to show off your beautiful dishware you’ve been gifted or invested in – don’t hide it away in a hutch!
I know tablescapes can look intimidating to create but I always like to think of it as building up layers until you love it. It’s a fun place to get creative – you really can’t go wrong here! I like to think about my color palette and what colors complement each other, plus I always like an unexpected color or décor element to top it off. For this table, I went with a black and gold color palette which is always a favorite of mine. The gold and black silverware, black and beige runner and smokey gray wine glasses all work together in the same palette.
Pro tip: Use pieces you already have in your house! For example, this runner was actually a remnant piece of fabric that we ran across the table and folded under at each end and ironed flat and it worked perfect as a table runner.
Next, I find a good base. Using a simple charger is always a nice way to visually ground the design of your table scape. On top of the charger, I chose a blue polka dotted dinner plate for a pop of color and elegant addition. The salad plate I chose has a very earthenware look and paired with the more formal dinner plate I get my perfect balance of laid back and luxe.
I choose to layer the napkin on top of the plates instead of off to the side where I feel like it can crowd everything, and visually I like the soft layer of the napkin within all my dishware.
The final pop of color is the bowl with blue stripes (complementing the dinner plate) and the green lentils – of course, this is for styling where it looks pretty and is more visually interesting but not practical for an actual party or event. In that case, I would use this same bowl sans lentils and hourglass, and instead would set an individual salt well in each bowl. I absolutely love how a small element like this can make a dinner party guest feel fancy!
