Georgia Lawyers for the Arts

Assisting Atlanta for 45 years

Two Alston & Bird attorneys founded Georgia Lawyers for the Arts ("GLA") back in 1975. Then Ben White and Bob Lower were young associates and directed by a partner to create a non-profit that would allow Georgia artists to receive pro bono legal services.

Over the next four decades, through its staff attorneys, network of more than 1,000 volunteer attorneys, and hundreds of law school students, GLA has provided much needed pro bono legal assistance.  This has included support to musicians, songwriters, photographers, sculptors, dancers, filmmakers, painters, actors and artists who otherwise could not have afforded legal representation and counseling. They have brought and continue to bring, much needed support to the ever growing artistic community in Atlanta.

In addition to artists, GLA has grown to provide assistance to essentially every Fulton County arts organization with an annual budget of less than $1 million.  Their mission is to further creativity by protecting and advising Georgia's artists and their vision is to create an environment where all artists have access to essential and protective legal services.

Georgia Lawyers for the Arts as a non profit organization relies on the support of the community and fundraising efforts.  Like most of these entities, GLA has seen a decline in contributions during the past few months.  They had to cancel two important  fundraising events because they invloved large gatherings.  They pivoted to a virtual wine tasting fundraiser in June that was a great success.  A professional solommier taught supporters the difference between wines from Napa and Sonoma . . . it was a virtual blast!

The wine tasting was well received in part because it is an amazing value, which admittedly isn't always the case for fundraisers.  GLA has partnered with 3 Parks Wine Shop, and each participant receives THREE fantastic bottles of wine for a discount value of $100.  For a minimal amount, participants can also have a charcuterie tray to enhance the tasting.  There are also delivery options available both inside and outside the Perimeter.

Georgia Lawyers for the Arts needs the community's support to survive this economic downturn.  Please consider taking part in next Winedown fundraising event scheduled for July 10th.  See you virtually there!
