Giving: The Secret to Living

Everything You Need to Know About the Atlanta Community Food Bank

The importance of giving to others should never be understated, and many say that the secret to living is giving. It’s not about what you do for yourself. It’s about how you’re able to better the lives of the people around you—your loved ones, the people in your community or the lives of people somewhere else in the world.

The Atlanta Community Food Bank knows exactly what it means to give. In 2019, the Atlanta Community Food Bank celebrated its 40th anniversary of actively working to make sure children, adults, families and the elderly in Metro Atlanta and North Georgia have access to nutritious food. Following their mission to fight hunger by engaging, educating and empowering their community, the Food Bank distributes over 60 million meals to more than 755,000 people in 29 counties.

Over a span of 40 years, the nonprofit organization has seen its reach grow from a single community kitchen in the basement of a local Atlanta Church, to working with over 600 partner agencies across 29 counties in North Georgia. Partner agencies range from food pantries, soup kitchens, senior programs and more. Because of this robust network, their partner agencies offer thousands of low-income Georgians groceries and nutritious meals.

Nearly 30,000 volunteers donate their time to the Food Bank’s mission each year, through a variety of activities and events, contributing over 81,000 hours of service. Volunteer service hours add the equivalent of nearly 40 full time staff, demonstrating how important community is to the Food Bank.

By donating, volunteering, advocating and educating, our community has raised funds and awareness to help people struggling with hunger. Once you start giving back to your community, you’ll see that positive actions encourage others to get involved, too. Not only will your actions benefit those on the receiving end of your good deeds, but you’ll find a personal sense of joy and fulfillment through your generosity. Approximately 19% of all children in Fulton County are food insecure. Food insecurity is the lack of access to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate food.
