Spruill Center for the Arts annual Student & Instructor Jewelry Market takes place every February and serves as a fundraising event for Spruill, as well as an opportunity for jewelry students and instructors to showcase their handcrafted creations. The market features approximately 20 jewelry designers, several of whom participate every year. Two of our returning artists for the upcoming market on February 9, 2020 are Spruill instructor, Joanne Hernandez and Spruill student, Josephine Fryar.
Joanne received a B.F.A in Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing with honors from Georgia State University in 1997. Her artwork incorporates precious metals and gemstones and is marked by a love of color and contrast, strong and unusual design, and reflects an arsenal of techniques. Her organic designs fluctuate between the literal and surreal. Joanne finds inspiration in science, the natural world, space, the environment, the future, psychology and interpersonal relationships, and this world we have created. Josephine first developed her passion for jewelry making in 2005 while living in New York. She moved to Atlanta in 2011 and began taking wire wrapping classes. In 2015 she continued her jewelry education by taking metalsmithing and jewelry fabrication classes at the Spruill Center for the Arts. She has also studied metal clay and received her Level 1 Instructor Certification in 2017. Josephine works with precious metals and natural stones and while her jewelry designs continue to evolve, her first love is wire wrap design which is prevalent in her creations.
