Everyone I meet during my visit to Charleston is talking about the work she’s had done, a grande dame, now looking more beautiful than ever. So tasteful and classic. A shining example of Southern charm. And, she’s 170 years old!
The iconic Mills House, the legendary pink hotel on the corner of Queen and Meeting Streets has seen many chapters of the city’s rich history, and following the completion of a transformative, multi-million-dollar renovation in December 2022, is ready to welcome a new chapter of its own.
The story begins in 1801, with Mary Grimke impressing guests with “beef steaks and oysters every evening.” When the Mills House Hotel opened in 1853, its grand scale, detailed construction, and lavish dining room, known for its elaborate menus, turned heads. Some things never change.
The Iron Rose is the Mills House signature restaurant with seating in the dramatic dining room or utterly charming patio. On cool evenings, a roaring fire on the brick patio becomes a gathering place for fashionistas, international travelers and guests stopping for a nightcap. The upstairs pool deck has shaded loungers, deep sofas for conversations and space for yoga classes, complimentary for guests.
Book a balcony room, with French doors to a private space overlooking Meeting and Queen streets. You’ll find the clip-clopping of horse-drawn carriages a reminder of the city’s deep and storied history.
This month, the city celebrates African-American and Caribbean cultures with MOJA (a Swahili word meaning ‘one,’ a fitting name for a festival that celebrates harmony in the community). Enjoy a wide range of events including visual arts, classical music, dance, gospel, jazz, poetry, R&B music, storytelling, theatre, children’s activities, traditional crafts, ethnic food, and more, all highlighting the many African-American and Caribbean contributions to western and world cultures.
