Fighting Racism with Technology

The South Fulton Arrow Youth Council recently launched a website to combat systemic racism through technology. According to Program Director John Reed III, the Arrow scholars were charged with finding a way to address systemic racism beyond participation in the marches.

“Activism requires concrete steps and resources to make inroads to the issues people face on a daily basis,” says Reed. “Students responded by creating a curated database of impactful resources to enable underserved community members to reach their next step towards improving their lives. The website, CSRT (Combatting Systemic Racism through Technology), aims to make educational, employment, economic, digital learning and wellness resources easily accessible to anyone with a phone, tablet or computer.

Along with the creation of two videos, the website was the culmination of the summer institute’s annual two-week camp. The site includes several thrusts, including Education, Scholarships and Grants, Employment (such as resume tools and job search resources), and Economic Resources. Council President Thomas Woods says his favorite part of the website is the Digital Resource portion, which includes Wifi resources and low-cost internet programs. This is especially important, says Woods, in this time of digital learning.

“The programs and links have been well-researched and designed specifically to target individuals who may have dropped out of school, recently re-entered society from the corrections system and those dealing with social wellness deficits,” says Reed. “They have built this tool as an answer to fight the system that oppresses too many within underserved communities. We're proud of their efforts and we applaud their leadership in seeking to make a difference where it counts.”

“I actually joined the Arrow Council to improve my public speaking,” Woods chuckles. “I have gained so many leadership qualities that I take with me to my other activities, such as Boy Scouts. It’s great to do community service and really give back to the community.”

To support the community, the Council recently held a back to school supply drive in Union City. Weekly virtual clubs will focus on various topics.
