When Duty Calls

Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys Foundation's Sister2Sister Mentoring Program

"To whom much is given, much will be required."

Over the years, I'd heard many sermons and speeches offering various points of view that expounded on that biblical verse (Luke 12:48), which signals to us to take responsibility for one another and be direct influencers of the generations that follow in our footsteps. It is our duty to disseminate our knowledge, talents, expertise, and successes to our communities—positively giving back and impacting the lives of those who need it most. The GABWA (Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys) Foundation's Sister2Sister Mentoring Program has done just that, answering that call of duty for more than 20 years.

The volunteer-based Sister2Sister Mentoring Program was founded to positively serve the needs of teen girls who have entered the juvenile court system by focusing on the importance of self-worth, confidence, and assurance through adult mentoring, bimonthly workshops, and training classes. From public-speaking workshops to discussing important issues like human trafficking and self-care, from field trips to servicing the community, participants are exposed to different areas of influences that shape their thoughts and actions for productive life experiences. Team-building, vision board parties, and other socially-centered lessons offer a layered and balanced approach for more well-rounded life lessons.

In 2019, with 23 active mentors donating over 800 hours, the program helped 43 participants by advocating for higher education, SAT and ACT preparation, health and wellness awareness, avoiding peer pressure, and much more!

Since its inception in 2000, the Sister2Sister Mentoring Program has helped over a thousand young ladies become valuable contributors to society. Sister2Sister prepares these young ladies for a better life and continues to answer the call of duty to influence, inspire, and uplift a community deserving of such a bright future.
