Healthy Bodies from the Beginning

Dr. Beth Flack shares steps for cultivating holistic health for the entire family

Dr Beth Anne Flack has been a chiropractor in Evans since 2011, specializing in family care. She enjoys serving a different population than most chiropractors by creating an environment where children are being seen early in life to optimize growth and development from birth. Dr. Flack’s office motto is “Healthier people, healthier planet.”

Q:  Could you give us an overview of how to pursue holistic health? Holistic health should include healthy eating habits, drinking plenty of water, regular exercise, rest/sleep, stress management and chiropractic care. We also like to use oils as an adjunct to chiropractic care. However, if that spine is not in line, then the oils are just a band-aid. For example, if the alignment on a car is off, causing the tires to wear, and you just replace the tires, then you are not getting to the root of the problem. To treat you most effectively, like a mechanic, we want to determine the root of your health issue.

Q:  What conditions do chiropractors treat? We treat subluxations of the spine, which cause the nervous system not to function at its optimum level. The subluxations may cause chronic pain, lower back pain and stiffness, headaches and migraines, neck and upper back pain and stiffness. Our treatment can provide a reduction in leg or arm pain, weakness, numbness and tingling. It assists with extremity joint pain and dysfunction as well as can give relief from carpal tunnel syndrome. Chiropractic care through adjustments may result in decreased colic, better digestion, less gas in babies, better pelvic positioning for pregnant mothers (resulting in a better birth and a happier space for the baby), sinuses functioning better, less depression, and so much more.

Q:  How is this helpful for pregnant women? It may provide optimal pelvic positioning during pregnancy to improve uterine function, reduce labor times and reduce the need for pain medication. It could reduce the chance of preeclampsia in the mother. Also, chiropractic care may provide assistance for more comfort with breastfeeding and latching.

Q:  Is it appropriate for children? Our office loves to serve children, and we encourage chiropractic health to be a part of their foundational habits as they grow - the same as regular dental and medical check-ups.

Q:  Can you give more specifics for the benefits for children? Treatments may help with head tilt or rotation to one side, provide relief from colic, asthma, reflux and tummy problems. Chiropractic care may assist with difficulty latching/nursing, may help with flat or misshaped heads, and may relieve pain children sometimes suffer from multiple ear infections.

Q:  Is it safe? Chiropractic care is widely recognized as one of the best non-invasive, drug-free treatments with an excellent safety record. Chiropractic malpractice is only a quarter of that seen by medical doctors.

Q:  Do you need a referral? No. We welcome all to our practice. We are a cash office because insurance doesn’t like to cover children, whom we love to serve.

Q:  What type of education or training do you need in order to become a chiropractor? You need four years of undergraduate school and four years of chiropractic care. I received a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training before I went to chiropractic school at Life University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Q:  Are X-Rays necessary? Not always, but just like you wouldn’t want a mechanic to fix your car without looking under the hood, I want a full picture of what I’m working with. I don't always recommend using x-rays with children, but I nearly always recommend them for adults.

Q:  Once you begin, is it a forever commitment? No, but just like you get regular medical and dental check-ups, it should become a routine part of the care of your body.

Q:  Any other things that you can tell us about your office that we may not know? Yes, there are a couple of things. Something we like to check for in our office are the primitive reflexes. These are the reflexes that are supposed to be there when you are born but integrate/disappear within the first year to 18 months of life. These reflexes can also become active during times of stress. The integration of these reflexes is an important part of developing your senses – proprioception (perception or awareness of the position and movement of the body), vestibular (having to do with the ear and balance), and vision.

The other thing that we have been incorporating more into our office is recommending essential oils as an adjunct to chiropractic care. We have had success in helping children with ear infections, colds, and clogged ducts. We even helped a mother whose child wasn’t sleeping well by combining chiropractic care with essential oils.

Dr Beth Anne Flack loves her work, cross stitching, cooking, and her family life. She is married to her wonderful husband, Kenny, who owns his own lawn business, Tru Turf Lawncare. They have four children - Mary Elizabeth (12), Lilly Belle (9), TJ (6), and Katheryn (2½) - who keep them on their toes. Princess is their adopted dog whom they all love. One of their favorite things to do is enjoying a family movie night at home. They also love going to the park together and going on vacation to explore new places.
