Building Stronger Bonds

Nurturing Parent-Child Relationships With Positive Parenting

In addition to spending time engaging and having fun with your child this summer, you can strengthen your parent-child bond with these Positive Parenting tips.

  1. Celebrate Your Child: Put your attention on what you want to see more of, encouraging problem-solving and consistently rewarding appreciated behavior. If your child does not meet an expectation, stay calm, kind, and curious. Celebrate their choices and learn to help them see how their outcomes are affected by their actions.

  2. Lead By Example: Your kids are always taking cues from you. Share what you’re thinking, feeling, and choosing as you navigate various situations, so they learn how to think through similar situations on their own. For fun, flip it and imitate your child’s actions too. Respectfully imitating behaviors you want to encourage and reinforce builds rapport, trust and self-esteem by helping your child feel seen and valued.

  3. Listen Up: Through active listening, you show love, empathy, and support. Really listen and get curious about what they are expressing. How are they experiencing the world? Openly share your points of view too, allowing space for the possibility that you may not always agree.
