Helping Hands Furnish Hope

Local Volunteers Create Comforting Homes for Those in Need

A home is one of the most precious gifts we have in life. It’s our shelter and comfort. Most of us cannot imagine losing our home. However, life comes with many unexpected twists, making us all vulnerable. No one knows that better than Megan Martin, founder of nonprofit Furnish Hope. After working as a teacher and principal for 20 years, Megan lost her dream job, forcing her to sell her home and many belongings. Devastated, she prayed. Her faith brought her a powerful vision. While still trying to get on her own feet, she felt compelled to create something for others in need. That vision is now called Furnish Hope.

Furnish Hope transforms what is an empty space upon move in, to a welcoming home for those who need furnishings and basic household essentials. “We meet people when they are at their rock bottom. The furnishings are a physical representation of love. They help people feel seen and bring hope for the future,” says Megan.

Furnish Hope partners with nonprofit agencies in Central Oregon to identify those in need. They work closely with the real estate community to learn of companies and families moving or downsizing. This beautiful match of need and abundance allows Furnish Hope to provide furnishings for veterans, families that have lost jobs and homes, families impacted by significant health issues, families displaced by fires, survivors of domestic violence starting over, stabilized/ recovering addicts, kids aged out of foster care and more.

Since 2019, Furnish Hope has grown to 36 volunteers, a warehouse, a delivery truck and two trailers. It’s run by Megan, Deborah Asato and Mary Barlow. They furnish an average of 20-30 houses a month. If you’d like to help others have the comforts of home, they accept furnishing donations on Tuesdays and Thursdays 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at the Furnish Hope warehouse.
