Tips for Everyday Gals

One of the questions I get asked most by my clients is 'what is contouring?' Should I be doing it? How do I contour my face?

Let’s start from the top.

What is Contouring

Contouring is using products that are one to two shades darker than your natural skin tone to create shadows where you want to sculpt and enhance your bone structure.

Since everyone’s face shape is different, contouring can vary based on the shape of your face.

Generally speaking, you are in the safe zone if you start up by your hairline and trace a backwards 3 on the side of your face, ending under your jaw line. Of course it is always good to know what you are working with in terms of your individual shape so you can enhance and highlight.

What You Need to Contour

Let’s leave Kim K to the professionals. Not many women I know have the time nor the desire to apply that much makeup everyday and let’s face it, celebrities like Kim are wearing a lot of makeup!

Contouring for us everyday gals is simple. Pick a contour shade that is one to two shades darker than your skin tone. You can use cream or powder—I prefer powder for myself since I have more oily skin.

You will also want a good brush; one that is narrow and will allow you to place the contour color exactly where you want it. Using a bigger brush will cause problems as you will end up placing the color in too large of an area.

Know your face shape and then go for it!
