Plenty of axe-throwing venues are run by people who enjoy axe throwing. The Dragon's Lair Axe & Tap is run by two people who compete in it at the world level. Co-owner Austin Luecke learned to throw with his dad at the family cabin, joined his first league in Minneapolis in 2018, and has qualified for every World Axe Throwing Championship since. He finished ninth in the world in Big Axe in WATL's first season and took fourth in Big Axe at the WATL US Open, a finish that put him on ESPN. Co-owner David "Lightning" Lewis found the sport in 2019 and built a throwing arena in his Lakeville garage. The two met as league rivals and became close friends. David competes in all five events, and he and partner Amy Coppersmith finished fourth in the world in Knife Duals in 2025. At the Chanticlear location on County Road 30, each arena holds up to 10 throwers, targets are projected, and hatchets, big axes and knives are all on the menu. Open throwing starts at $25 an hour, and WATL- and WKTL-sanctioned leagues run every season. A partnership with Chanticlear Bar and Grill brings pizza, appetizers, craft beer and cocktails into the mix, and an onsite shop sells axes, knives and gear. It works for birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette parties, and corporate team-building. Throwers must be 12 or older and wear closed-toe shoes.
