About Us

In 1957, Bob Kinnan and his family turned a building on their farmland, where they had stored farm equipment, into a little bar called Bob's Lookout. It seated 55. Beer was 30 cents a bottle. By 1959 there was live country music seven nights a week ("Music 7½ nights a week," the ads said), with acts like Mel Tillis on the bill, and when the seats filled up, people danced under the stars on the area's first outdoor patio or sat on beer cases on the grassy knolls with the farm animals nearby. Bob's mother, "Ma" Myrtle Kinnan, ran the kitchen, serving 50-cent burgers and a 16-ounce porterhouse dinner for $3.95. Pineview Lane wasn't paved until 1983. More than 65 years later, The Lookout Bar & Grill is still family-owned, now run by Bob's son Michael and his wife Brenda, and it's believed to be Maple Grove's oldest retailer. The farm bar has grown into a restaurant with a four-season porch, banquet room, fire pit, kids' play area, "the Alley" and an outdoor bar, plus catering, two food trucks and a seasonal spot at Andrews Park in Champlin. There's something going on every day: bingo, trivia, line-dancing lessons, karaoke and live bands, never with a cover charge. Locals still call it the best-kept secret in Maple Grove.
