What to Plant in June

Many people have decided to start growing their own food during this time. If you're new to gardening, there are a few things you should know before you get your hands dirty. The hardiness zone you live in (see map below) dictates which seeds you should plant and when. Here are just a few of the veggies you should plant in June.

Cabbage (Zones 3-7)

Cabbage is part of the Cole Crop family, like broccoli and Brussels sprouts, and contains more vitamin C than oranges. Be sure to fertilize and water the plants when the cabbage heads form.

Beans (Zones 3-8)

Beans grow fast in warm soil and yield a crop in as little as 35 days depending on the variety.

Peas (Zones 3-5)

If you live in the northern part of the United States, June is the perfect time to plant peas in the garden. They thrive in the mild summer weather and cooler air at night.

Beets (Zones 3-6)

Beets come in red, striped and gold varieties, and both the root and the leaves are edible. If you live in Zones 3-6, sow beets in June for a fast late-summer harvest.
