While nearly nothing about this past year went according to plan for anyone, schoolchildren likely bore the brunt of our extreme routine change. With in-person classes not an option for many, students have had to turn to remote learning aided by adults in their household—many of whom are juggling working from home as well.

It comes as no surprise, then, that many students have fallen behind. Enter Kumon of Loveland. Local parents have been turning to Kumon to enhance their child’s academic performance in math, reading and writing since its opening in 2015.

Kumon professional instructor Tara Chiapelli recognized early on the impact the pandemic was going to have on students—and prepared ahead of time. “As COVID-19 crept across the country last year, I recognized that the possibility of closure was imminent,” she says. “In anticipation, I lesson-planned each student for an extended period of time, allowing them to continue their growth. We quickly adjusted and moved to an online platform between March and May.”

Even after businesses reopened, Kumon continued online offerings—recognizing that for some, quarantine would be a way of life. Now, Tara says they continue to offer Zoom instruction with remote assistants, in addition to in-center observation and tutoring with plexiglass barriers, air-filtration, masks, social distancing and constant cleaning.

Despite every school’s best efforts, some students will still fall behind—and Kumon’s unique approach can help them overcome any detriment. Kids aren’t tutored in the traditional sense—they’re instead guided to work independently and learn to solve problems for themselves. “Kumon is a program meant to fill in learning gaps that students may have encountered, and which make progress harder,” Tara explains. A notable distinction from other learning centers, and one that could make all the difference.

Does Your Student Need Help?
Tara suggests watching for these six signs—they could indicate a student who needs additional help with their studies.

1. Consistently saying homework/schoolwork is “boring.”

2. Refusing to read aloud.

3. Throwing “tantrums” when it’s time to do homework.

4. Homework takes hours longer than it should.

5. Not completing work independently; needing lots of help or missing assignments all together.

6. Asking to stay home or being “sick” a lot.
